Golden Oldies

Who or what is a “GOLDEN OLDIE”? That is a good question!

In my eyes a “Golden Oldie” is someone who has coached, umpired or played hockey or even someone related to them and is still interested in hockey or keeping in touch with friends they have kept up with or made in the past but now lost touch.

The idea started at our 40^th annivesary weekend two years ago but is only now starting to come together and like most ideas needs someone to drive it forward and make it happen. (Are you that person? If so let me know)

The idea is to meet on a semi regular basis (or more often) and take in a game(s) at Strathallan School some Saturday and then retreat to a suitable venue to have a “lemonade” and perhaps some food and catch up with old times and share some fellowship and memories of the good old days and support to each other.

In the last few years we sadly have lost a couple of the original members of Perthshire Hockey Club and in their latter years they did not enjoy good health and we feel that as a group we could perhaps have helped them and their families during a difficult period and made things slightly easier for them.

I would cite my own recent family situation where my mum in her last few years developed dementia and although physically fine struggled day to day and latterly had to be in residential care. She was a keen bowler and she was always happy when people from the bowling club came to visit her and talk about old times and we also managed to take her to Opening and closing Day at the Club she was a member of. These were special days to her and we took her to other matches where she met people from the past and this stimulated her. Her carers always remarked what a different person she was when she was looking forward to and came back from these outings.

I plan to try and organise a pre Christmas one in December where we could meet at Bells sports centre and watch our mens indoor team play in National league Division three, probably the 9^th of December, but the fixtures have not been released yet so look out for an e mail coming out soon.
